Why Are More Women Learning Electronic Music Nowadays?

Updated: Feb 4

Electronic music has long been a male-dominated field, but nowadays, we’re seeing a major shift. At our electronic music school, 70% of our students at Skilz DJ Academy in Luxembourg are women—a much higher percentage than men. Why is this happening? Let’s explore the reasons behind this growing trend.

More Female Role Models

With artists like Charlotte de Witte, Peggy Gou, Rezz, and The Blessed Madonna leading the industry, more women are seeing electronic music as an accessible and inspiring career path. Social media and streaming platforms have also made female DJs and producers more visible than ever. When aspiring musicians see successful women in the field, it reinforces the idea that they, too, can succeed.

Increased Access to Education

Online tutorials, workshops, and inclusive music schools have made learning production easier for everyone. Many programs now cater specifically to women and non-binary artists, creating safe and welcoming learning environments. Initiatives like Skilz DJ Academy and other electronic music schools have also introduced mentorship programs aimed at empowering female students.

Greater Representation in the Industry

More women are being hired by record labels, booking agencies, and major festivals, ensuring a stronger presence in the electronic music scene. Industry leaders are recognizing the importance of diversity and actively working to create inclusive spaces. This shift is making it easier for female artists to gain visibility and secure opportunities that were previously out of reach.

Breaking Gender Stereotypes

Electronic music is no longer seen as a “boys’ club.” Cultural shifts are encouraging women to take up technical roles, from DJing to sound design, without fear of discrimination or exclusion. This is evident in the rise of all-female DJ lineups at major festivals and the increasing number of female engineers and producers working behind the scenes.

Creative Freedom & Expression

Electronic music offers limitless possibilities for self-expression, allowing artists to experiment without traditional band structures or industry gatekeeping. Many women find this freedom appealing, leading them to explore music production in greater numbers. The ability to create an entire track independently without relying on a band or external production teams has been a major draw for female musicians.

The Rise of Female-Centric Festivals & Events

More festivals and events are embracing female talent, ensuring equal representation on lineups. Events like Lady of the House and Femme Fest are dedicated to showcasing female DJs and producers, proving that there is a significant audience for their music. This increased exposure further motivates women to enter the scene.

Advancements in Technology & Accessibility

The rise of affordable and user-friendly music production software has played a huge role in opening doors for aspiring musicians. Platforms like Cubase, Ableton Live, FL Studio, and Logic Pro have lowered the barrier to entry, making it easier for anyone to start producing. Women are leveraging these tools to create and distribute their music without needing expensive studio setups.

Final Thoughts

The rise in female electronic music students is a sign of progress in the industry. With more representation, access, and support, we can expect even more women shaping the future of electronic music. The scene is evolving, and it’s exciting to see a more diverse and balanced landscape emerge.
